•Business Process Reviews - mapping and analysing the current process; providing comparison against best practice; making recommendations for improvements (including process changes, technology solutions / enhancements); developing business cases. Processes reviewed include:
*Financial processes - accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, credit management, fixed assets, payroll, general ledger, financial reporting, purchasing
*Non financial processes - master data, HR processes, office administration, publication support
*Industry sectors include: mining, retail, primary, FMCG, manufacturing, service, public sector.
•Process Support – providing guidance and support for the implementation / transition of process improvements and new technology.
•Project Management – project management of the review and implementation of process improvements and automation solutions (includes: SAP, imaging, electronic data capture, workflow/task management software, and expense management systems).
•Shared Services - Noel is considered an expert on the shared services methodology for structuring back-office functions. His experience includes the assessment, planning, implementation and operation of shared service centres.

Professional background

Noel Currie, Managing Director, BP Consulting, is recognised as an expert in shared services and business processing. A chartered accountant he has led shared service initiatives since 1996. He implemented and managed Carter Holt Harvey’s transactional shared service which commercialised in 2001 to become Oxygen Business Solutions and was one of three consultants who developed the New Zealand Defence Force’s Joint Logistics Support Organisation (JLSO). During his time with Oxygen, Noel developed its Business Process outsourcing services which utilised technology including: imaging, electronic data capture, workflow and task management software, with integration to ERP systems.

Noel established BP Consulting with the goal of helping businesses get more from their back-office functions, shared service centres and technology investments. Noel provides advice to organisations on how to reengineer their business processes to maximise effectiveness and efficiency. Noel has provided advice to organisations as wide ranging as OCS, Dairy Farmers, Rio Tinto, Carter Holt Harvey, New Zealand Defence Force, NZ Police, New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Farmers Trading Company and Johnson & Johnson Consumer Division.

Noel has been a regular speaker on the shared service conference circuit, having presented on various topics to conferences in Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore. Noel has also contributed articles to the international “Shared Services News” publication. During March 2006 Noel developed and presented IQPC’s two day “Accounts Payable Master Class” series of seminars in Sydney and Melbourne. Due to the success of the seminars Noel will be presenting them again in Australia during March 2007.

Examples of typical assignments:

ERP System Review:
Reviewed the implementation of an ERP system, its setup and how the business was utilising it. included reviewing the project, system configuration, user profiles, new functionality, business processes, month end close procedures, billing processes, reporting, outstanding go-live issues, identifying and implementing process improvements

Shared Services:
The assignment involved the: strategic review; business case development; process/organisational design; technology identification; and implementation planning for a shared service. The goal was to gain economies and efficiencies in the operation of support and administrative functions. This project covered 18 functional areas and took over 2 years to complete. The functional areas included the traditional transaction based activities such as Accounts Payable, plus the process / service activities such as procurement, facilities management and publication support. One of three consultants, Noel was responsible for 7 of the 18 functional areas (Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Credit Card Processing, Publication Support, Codification) and assisted in 2 others (Personnel Administration, Procurement).

Business Process Improvement:
Noel project managed the implementation of an Accounts Payable automation solution. The system introduced imaging, electronic data capture, workflow and task management software that integrates with the clients ERP system.

Financial Process Review:
Noel undertook a review of the financial processes for an organisation as part of its investigations into replacing its General Ledger system. This review involved analysing the current processes, developing process maps, identifying areas for improvement and new IT system requirements.
